First Paycheck

Bridgette's first paycheck. She makes $7.05 an hour. Not bad.

Summary of us

Don is a lot sicker than I thought. Since his last doctor's appointment, we've been checking his blood sugar several times a day. I get the pleasure of sticking him! Ha Ha.
On a serious note...Don is doing everything he's supposed to in order to keep it in check. He follows a strict diet....exercises every day....and takes the medications as prescribed. I became suspicious when in the process of checking his blood sugar, the lowest I saw it was just under 300. It should always be below 140. I couldn't understand what was going on. Then finally he tells me how bad it really is and that the doctor said pancreatic arrest...i.e death...is a real concern.
Moral of the story...never let a man go to the doctor by himself.
I am very worried about him. I am making him an appointment for next week and you can bet I'll be there.
I talked to the other man in my life yesterday. Reese had to run five miles after school...two of which he did pulling a tire. And all of this for stupid stuff...like missing a morning practice because he had an unforeseen orthodontist appointment. The kid is in junior high. It's ridiculous. I told him I was fixing to give that coach some mama drama. Reese didn't think that was a very good idea, so I think I will spare him the embarrassment.
I hope to get a hold of Reagan and Sage today. Those blondies are difficult to catch sometimes.
This week was National FFA Week, so Bridgette went to a barn warming dance last night. She said she danced to almost every song, so I know she's going to be sore today. I thought it would do her good to sleep late before she goes to work at 11. She's really slimming down. I especially notice it in the prominence of those gorgeous cheekbones of hers. She's doing a great job at eating healthy and working out. I love doing yoga with her because we get cracked up sometimes when we get tangled up...or can't balance...or it hurts like hell. Doesn't do much for our zen, but it's fun.
I've been working a lot...contacting vendors and ordering. It all seems to be coming together nicely...it's just a constant stress worrying about something I might be missing. It's all in the details. Today, Don and I are making our rounds to the wineries. We have to schedule are lives around Bridgette's work schedule. ..which sucks...but I'm the one that wanted her to work. It's worth it though for all of us. The long term payoff to her will be immeasurable.
Skeeter is still spoiled. The guys know how much I love him, and I am impressed that they are so tolerant of me and 'that little dog'.
We're expecting two to three inches of snow today. It has just begun to lightly fall.

Ash Wednesday

As a Baptist from Texas, I find Ash Wednesday to be significantly different here in this predominately Catholic community. It never fails, every year, that when I see that first person with black smudges on their forehead...I instinctively have the urge to tell them that they have a dirty spot on their face and offer them my handkerchief. Thankfully...thus far I have remembered the significance before I opened my mouth.

An Adventurous Hump Day

Today was one of those days that I enjoy. It was an adventure.
This morning I went to St. James Winery to meet with their retail manager to get some ideas for the wine room/gift shop . As I approach the building, a nice looking gentleman behind me hurries ahead and opens the door for me. And behind him there is an entire entourage of 'secret service men'...wearing slacks and jackets and the infamous 'earpiece'. There had to be at least a dozen of them. Once inside, I moved off to a corner and just watched. I finally asked an employee what was going on. And here's the deal: The nearby military base trains men to protect the top brass as well as other high up officials such as the governor. Today, they visited the winery. It was really pretty neat to witness. Since these guys seemed so stone faced and unfriendly, I had the incredible urge to strike up a conversation and chit chat, but this time...I practiced some restraint. I stuck to business and got some great merchandising ideas.
Following the stop at the winery, I went to look at a counter/display case that came from the Montauk State Park's old post office. It is made from mahogany and glass...and is beautiful...and would look great in the wine room. I love beautiful pieces that have a significant history attached.
After that little excursion, I met my friend, Rhonda, for lunch at Sybill's. We stayed there visiting until nearly three o'clock.
And of course, I checked in at the hotel to see how things were progressing there. Joe was there to help pick out upholstery fabric, so that's one more thing crossed off our list.
While on the road, I called my dad and he's always fun to talk to. I love his perspective on things. So refreshing.
Don called to let me know about his doctor's appointment. The verdict: His body is not converting sugar...causing the whole domino effect of issues and symptoms. The doctor gave him a medication for diabetes that will also suppress his appetite and cause weight to fall off rapidly. Once his blood sugar is controlled, everything else corrects itself. I'm glad it wasn't anything more serious. I was worried.
Now I'm back home trying to get caught up here. The kids got out of school at noon today and Bridgette is working until five. Don, Greg and Max went to the city, thereby giving me plenty of time to accomplish great things.
We'll see...

Poker Night

It's Monday, which means it's Poker Night at the Schaefer House. The guys will be occupied for several hours. I watched for a little bit..it's sooo entertaining..., and then came upstairs to tie up a few loose ends. My schedule for the week is pretty demanding, so I'm trying to get a jump on things.
Don and Greg went to Illinois today to take Don's boat to the shop to get the windshield replaced. On his way home from the last fishing trip, a rock or something hit the windshield and shattered the glass.
Upon their return, Don brought me home flowers. They are beautiful and it made my day.
I ended up caving on the mixer issue. Since they were mixing food items only, I didn't see any harm...plus the flowers helped. I became somewhat concerned when I heard the commotion due to the fact that they failed to lock the mixing bowl in place prior to mixing. Bridgette came to their rescue and showed them how to do it. I was pleased that they did such a great job cleaning the kitchen, and therefore I might let them play with my toys again.
As for the remainder of the day...I spent most of it on the phone or the computer...making progress though...that's what counts, right?
Bridgette got her hair trimmed and brows waxed and then she and I did yoga...her first time. I always feel better following a yoga session, and I hope Bridgette reaps the same benefits.
I talked to Reese this evening. He is very excited about having a new sibling. He's hoping for a brother. I have yet to talk to Sage and Reagan.
Don is having additional blood tests run tomorrow. I worry about him and hope that the results are good. He's not always a very cooperative patient.
Skeeter is doing fabulous and I still adore him.
Otherwise...that's it in a nutshell...not much going on here in Missouri.
I think I will take me and a book and head to bed.

Crazy Busy

It's so crazy busy around here that I don't even have time to blog. And to top it all off, Don just called and gave me a list of stuff he needs from the store to...get this...make trout bait. Yeah...he needs white bread, cream cheese, food coloring, lard, and sparkles???...And the funny part is he really thinks he's going to get to use my KitchenAid mixer to make fish bait.
I don't think so, Loverboy.

Bridgette's First Day

Bridgette enjoyed her first day on the job. For me it was just like her first day of kindergarten. I felt a knot in my stomach as I dropped her off.
But she did fine!
Ashley Peebles, a girl Sage went to school with, trained Bridgette today. She learned the ice cream position, and when I picked her up she had splatters of ice cream all over the top half of her apron. She said the splatters came from the shakes...and she had difficulty making the bumps on the ice cream cones...it is harder than it looks. Bridgette also said everyone was very nice to her and the worst part was that her legs and back hurt from standing for 6 hours straight. She's ready to go back tomorrow.
I'm glad it went well.
To keep myself occupied as not to worry while Bridgette was working, I made bread...cleaned house...read...and watched TV. I got the cutest valentine card from the kids in the mail today. The card is huge and has caricatures of dogs on it and when you open it...it plays the song 'Who Let the Dogs Out'. All the kids signed it...even Aaron.
It absolutely made my day.

A major boo-boo

Yesterday was a long day.
For starters, our accountant, Dave, came to our house and we worked in the office all morning. The good news is that our paperwork is in good shape and we just about have everything we need in order to file our taxes. As soon as Dave left, Don and I headed to our next meeting in St. James. Before we left, Don asked me to get three blank checks from various accounts so we could close this deal. To make a long story short, at the meeting I wrote a check for a large amount....using the wrong check. So, in essence, I screwed up two checks. I was so emabarassed.
I had to drive to Rolla this morning to deliver the correct checks.
We ended the evening well though, with dinner at Sybill's and then a ping-pong match at our friends Mike and Linda's house.

Bridgette the Dairy Queen

Today was a 'free' day. We had no meetings or appointments or places to be...or at least I didn't. Don and Nick went to the farm for the day, so I had the house to myself. Yea.
It's almost five p.m. and I still haven't gotten dressed. I cleaned house, watched TV, read, and had pizza delivered. My downtime is a necessity... for all of us. Now I am rejuvenated and ready for the busy day we have planned tomorrow.
Miss Bridgette had Dairy Cow Judging practice after school today. She is the only girl on the team and she said this first practice was awkward. Apparently they made over her incessantly. One kid even stated that they needed to quit flirting with the girl and get busy. Now she is really Miss Dairy Queen!
I asked her to explain to me what dairy cow judging is all about. I learned way more than I wanted to know. For example: it's a good thing if the cows have veins on their milk sack. Hmmmm. Now I won't be able to keep myself from staring at every cow's milk sack that I encounter.
I'm glad Bridgette isn't weird like me.

Vi Turns 80

Don's mother, Vi, celebrated her 80th birthday yesterday. We took her out to dinner at Sybill's in St. James.

Experimenting With Hair

Bridgette and I played with different hairstyles. She went curly while I attempted the 40's look.
We had fun laughing and being girly. When Sage and Reagan get here we're going to do this again, so soon you'll see pictures of the blondies.

A Texas Education

I purchased an overpriced mess of okra (from Mexico) at our local Wal-mart. I told Don how excited I was that we were going to have okra with our fish for supper tonight. Yum, yum.
As I am washing the okra and getting ready to prepare it, Don walks by and says, "That's okra?"
And of course I blurt out incredulously, "You've never seen okra before!!!!"
"Not before it's been cooked" he said.
We're gonna have to plant this boy some okra...he's really missing out.
I'm taking it that he never really got the funny about how my unshaven legs were like picking okra.
Hmmmm...
Truly shocking.
So I fry the precious okra and place the dish next to me on the table because I know I'll be the only one eating it. But,much to my surprise Don asked for some.
He then asks me, "why didn't you bread it?"
"I did...with cornmeal" I said.
Evidently the only okra this man has ever seen is that heavily breaded stuff at Cracker Barrel.
He tastes it and then said, "Oh. That's pretty good. Even thought it looks like s*#t, it tastes pretty good."
At last...the man has been enlightened.

An ordinary Monday

Today has been a calm Monday. After I took Bridgette to school this morning, I exercised to a ballet conditioning workout DVD that only reiterated my lack of coordination. Tough stuff. I will definitely be sore tomorrow.
Sage, Reese, and Reagan didn't have school today. Reese called and said he was bored. I suggested he clean his room, but I don't think that was the kind of stimulus he was seeking. Sage was with Aaron and Reagan was with Lee in Canyon. I'm sure they're having fun.
For the remainder of the morning I cleaned house and played with Skeeter. Don says he wishes I took as good care of him as I do that dog. I told him that Skeeter is always happy to see me, plus he minds me and does what I say. That's something I just can't get Don to do. Hmmmm.
After lunch I went to my nail appointment. No matter how long I go to the same Asian people...I still have hell understanding them. Is it just me?
My nails look and feel good though, so it's always worth it.
Don is at the attorney's office with his mom, who will be 80 tomorrow, to finish up her trust. I didn't want to go along with him for that one.
I picked Bridgette up from school and then took her to Dairy Queen to turn in her work permit and pick up her uniform. She is going to look soooo cute. Her first day is Saturday. She's excited since she knows some of the other kids employed there and they told her stories of how much fun it is. I hope she enjoys the experience.
The house is clean....Skeeter has been bathed...Bridgette's situated, so I'm pretty much done for the day.
Tonight is poker night, so the guys will be here shortly. I plan to sit back and relax and watch them play. It's always a good time.

Valentine Banquet

We attended a benefit steak dinner on Valentine's Day. The oil company sponsored a table and here are some of the employees. We had a great time.
Greg and Joyce with what was left of the chocolate covered strawberries Don won in the food auction.

Me and Don with too much wine and too close to the camera.

Gary, the oil company's bookeeper.

Jeannie and James.

Happy Valentines Day!

We are spoiled rotten.
BB and Gramps sent Bridgette a very nice teddy bear and a huge heart-shaped balloon for Valentine's Day, and I got a gorgeous plant. When Bridgette talked to Gramps, she forgot all about valentines day when he told her he bought some goats. That was the highlight of her day. I swear that girl is Ellie Mae Clampitt reincarnated.
Don is a scrooge when it comes to these commercial holidays, however he manned up and did well. He gave me roses and cooked me breakfast and he gave Bridgette a box of sugar-free chocolates, as not to spoil her weight watchers points. Isn't that sweet! Now he said he's ready to get all of this pink and red crap out of the house....like the Valentine table cloth on the kitchen table. He hates it. I told him I would designate a holiday just for him and call it 'Grumpy Old Man Day'. He kind of liked that idea.
Oh...and Grandpa Bill sent Bridgette a valentine as well, and she was thrilled about that. She was glad somebody finally wrote her back. ha ha
I called the kids and they were so sweet. Reagan lost her voice, but says she feels ok. They are going to Amarillo with my parents to Tyrel and Hailey's wedding reception. That will be a fun time! Especially the ride there and back. You get that group together and they are a hoot.
Here in Missouri we're just hanging around the house today and then Don and I are going to a benefit steak dinner tonight. I always look forward to eating a good steak.

Enjoy your Valentine's Day!

Honey B to Worker B

Bridgette has a job!
She had an interview at Dairy Queen yesterday and the managers told her they were impressed with her politeness, thought she would be a good worker, and offered her a job.
We are so proud of her.
Since Bridgette is only 15, her hours are restricted and she cannot work in the kitchen and handle knives. She will be working the front counter and drive-thru, which is where you really see what the public is made of. What a great experience for her. I think she'll be great at it.
Her uniform consists of non-skid shoes, khakis, DQ shirt and apron, and Bridgette's favorite...the visor.
At least it's not a hair net.

My New Favorite Phrase...

Mama Drama
..defined by teenagers as... "my mom freaking out about something in front of my friends and embarrassing me so bad that I almost die and have no hopes of ever having a social life ever again"
Threaten your teenager with it today. It works.

Higher Education

Don and I spent most of the day in the city. We went to downtown Clayton, which is the 'Wall Street' of St. Louis, to meet with some financial advisors.
I was fascinated. There were financial institiutions everywhere.
It was raining so I was glad I had my umbrella. I enjoyed watching all the suits walk by up and down the sidewalks with their umbrellas in hand, too. I was also impressed by the tall office buildings...the nice boardroom...and all the jibberish that was talked about in the meeting. I'm sure it was important, but I didn't understand most of it.
We had lunch at a fancy little place across the street. Don and I both had grilled chicken salad, and a bowl of tomato and fennel soup.
It doesn't take much to impress this country girl.

Honey B and Skeeter

I took Bridgette to the dentist today for a checkup...since I took Skeet to the vet for his checkup yesterday, I wanted to be fair and not neglect the kid.
Anyway...no cavities. Yea! And her wisdom teeth are coming in and the dentist said she has room for them. Another Yea!

Bathroom

They finished painting the bathroom. This picture is pretty dark, but I think it will be fine once we get everything put back where it belongs. We shall see...

Manic Monday

I took Skeeter to the vet this morning for his second set of shots. He now weighs a whopping 2.9 pounds.
It rained this afternoon and how lovely it was! We're looking forward to additional rainfall later in the week.
The rest of the day was filled with errands, cleaning, and cooking. Peterson, Olivia, Greg, Jake, and Max came over for supper, and now the guys are playing cards. I enjoy watching them, as they've played together for more than 30 years and can practically read each others minds.
Tomorrow is 80's day at school and I have a group of girls coming over early in the morning so I can fix their hair 'big'.
Hmmmm....I don't think it's a compliment that I was selected for that job. I'm sure they think I'm still stuck in the 80s with my hair. Funny.

Sunday Rounds

Bridgette is feeling better, but she sounds terrible, as she lost her voice Friday night. Her friends were here all weekend. They went bowling last night...and Bridgette says they weren't very good at it.
Today Don and I went to the Midwestern Grape and Wine Conference at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Lake of the Ozarks. We walked through the trade show and checked out some of the mechanical equipment. Don is contemplating planting more acres than we originally planned, which surprises me somewhat. But...I should know by now that he does everything in a big way.
I saw Sage's picture on their blog. She looks gorgeous as usual. And I just got off the phone with the kids. They are so special. They made their Sunday rounds to the Watsons'. Reagan said Ma is so lonely that she is cooking lots of food for everybody.
Sounds like it might rain there. Our forecast shows rain for the next three days.
I'm glad to be home...and happy to see Bridgette and Skeeter. I can't wait for spring break so I can see the rest of my babies.
As for the rest of the evening...I think I'll watch the Grammy's and then turn in early.

Reminiscent

Four teenage girls are here getting ready to go to an impromptu 'get together' at their friend, Tyson's, house.
Music...all the primping and giggling, as well as the scent of hair spray and perfume emanating from Bridgette's room, bring back memories of my younger days. I'm glad the girls are having fun. And I'm glad I will be dropping them off at Tyson's, as well as picking them up...and that I've communicated with the parents. Keeping tabs on teenagers is difficult now, and will only worsen when they start driving.
Sage has been good about staying out of trouble and I hope all the kids do the same.
On a different note...
Wasn't the weather absolutely beautiful today?
The guys are spending the night at the farm, so tonight I have several hours to myself. Yea!!!
Just me and Skeeter...doing whatever we want. Except...Skeeter has been a little stinker lately. The chewing on everything and dragging toilet paper all over the dining room and peeing on the kitchen floor is just the beginning of it. He's been so docile up to this point that I thought I had avoided the 'new puppy crap'. Guess not.
Oh, well. I'm ready to enjoy a nice laid-back weekend...despite the imperfection.

.

Genius or Debacle?

The guys spent the morning loading this 21 ft tank onto a trailer with a crane. Then they removed both ends by using a cutting torch...a sledge hammer...and a forklift. Don and Nick are hauling the tank to one of the farms to use it as a culvert in a creek crossing.
My beloved husband thinks up some interesting ideas...the engineer coming out in him. He also does everything in a big way.
Don is very safety conscious, but I still worry.
Just how are they going to unload this thing when they get there?
I probably don't want to know.

Typical Thursday

Bridgette woke up feeling somewhat better, but I went ahead and kept her home in order to avoid a relapse. I emailed some of her teachers to schedule some make up tests, and when they replied...they included some really nice comments about her. I asked Bridgette how much she was paying them and she just smiled and said she really is a good student. It was cute.
The rest of the day was pretty typical. We met with hotel representatives all afternoon and then went to Sybill's for dinner and drinks with Rhonda and Chuck. For dessert, we had the most incredible chocolate crepes.

Sick and Tired

The kids are sick, so I cooked them some potato soup. I so want to grow up and be like Ma.
Nick went to work, but Bridgette stayed home from school. I took her to the doctor and sure enough, she had a fever and a wicked sore throat. The doctor prescribed some antibiotics, so hopefully that will help. She also received her last Guardasil immunization as well as a tetanus booster. I thought we would never convince her to take the shots in her hip instead of her arm. She reminded me so much of Gramps.
After getting my little Honey B situated, I was on a mission to get some paint, as the contractor is waiting on me. Go figure. We usually can't get a contractor to show up, so this eager beaver guy is a little out of the norm. So, I toted around a 20x20 inch porcelain tile (like that in the bathroom) all over town so I could choose a paint color.
And it is....'Palm Desert Tan'
I thought this rennovation stuff would be fun, but it's not. I think it's only fun for the people who know what the hell they are doing.
I'll take pictures and show you a before and after once it's finished.

It's all about the gravy

I actually cooked tonight...lemon and garlic chicken, winter vegetables, apple and pear crisp, with a hot roll and milk...ha, ha.
Anyway...for the gravy, I used the gravy boat my parents gave me for Christmas. It has a compartment inside where you put water and then heat it in the microwave and it keeps your gravy warm. Pretty nifty!

Girl Friday

First thing this morning, I attempted to finish some paperwork I started last night. No such luck. Contractors showed up bright and early to start on the drywall downstairs and he asked me for the paint color for our bathroom.
Like I know anything.
I took a color chart and told him I would work on it. This ought to be interesting.
I had to leave before I was able to choose a color because I had a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce. It went really well. We discussed details of the upcoming Grape Jam, which is a blue grass festival, as well as 'Tour Missouri' a bike riding event that will encompass St. James.
I love this stuff.
On the way back from the meeting, I called my mom and had a really nice visit with her.
Now I am back in the office working on labor costs and invoices. Fun, fun. I'm beginning to feel like I have a 'real job'.
Oh, and I better figure out a color for the bathroom...not my cup of tea.
Any suggestions?

Brag Page

The kids' names were listed on the honor roll in Petersburg's, The Paper.
Sage was voted Class Favorite.
Reagan is a bookworm.
Reese is a brainiac.
Bridgette is making the grade, too...with an attitude to match.
And most importantly...they're good people.

Yep....I'm a proud Momma

Way to go, kids!!!

This was a first...

I just phoned a florist and had flowers sent to a woman...from my husband.
Hmmmmm...you might say. But there's more to the story. And one of these days I will get this man trained completely.
Don was on the phone to this lady...who handles some of his business...and he made her cry. Even though he never said anything ugly and never raised his voice...I saw it coming. It was the line of questioning and that authoritative voice and putting her on the spot that did it. And before knowing him like I do...I would've cried too.
HE didn't see it coming though...and when she started crying...he felt horrible. He apologized profusely, but the damage had already been done.
So...we ordered her some flowers. And this is what he put on the card:
Sorry I was such an a$$#*le. I know you're under the gun. -Schaefer
(isn't that sweet)
She works in a very large office with numerous women...is older and single...and probably doesn't get flowers very often. This is a tough way to get them, but I hope it makes her Monday a little better.

SuperBowl Sunday

Well...we had hoped the Cardinal's would win...Kurt Warner pulled at our heartstrings...but we had fun nonetheless!

The "realness" of a movie

We watched the movie, Taken, last night. I am so glad I watched it after Sage traveled to Hawaii. Scary stuff.
